For The Love Of Horses
Before my love for photography, came my love for horses. My earliest memories are of my obsession with horses! Dreaming of having one of my own, galloping across fields, reading books filled with adventure, and watching every single film I could get my hands on, dedicated to these loving, long legged creatures.
When I was 14, my dream finally came true, and I was blessed to be given Kwintus; truly the love of my life. It's hard for to write about him, because the love I have for him is so completely overwhelming, and I can't explain it to anyone. Kwintus is 25 now, he's still as beautiful as the day he came into my life, and I can look into his eyes and know everythings ok. He lives in France, about 3 hours away from my parents, in a retirement home for horses. When I tell you that it's horse paradise, I'm not kidding! They spend their entire days (and many of them, nights) out in vast fields, eating grass, playing and sleeping. It's the good life.
Being so far away, I miss him a lot, and I only get to see him a couple of times a year. I'll be heading over to pay him a visit in August, and I can't wait.
This photoshoot with Jess Black, and her horse, Lilly, was something I've wanted to do since I first picked up a camera. I don't ride a lot at the moment; partly due to lack of time, resources, but also, if I'm totally honest, lack of desire. I'm so intensely loyal and in love with my horse, that the thought of "moving on" to another one is too much to bear. I know thats very irrational and strange, but it's just my reality. One day, I know for a fact that my desire to ride will come back, and I'll go back to being "horse girl" (that's what I was known as at school!). For now, I'm happy riding on occasion, loving my horse, and capturing these photographs.
This entire shoot went without a hitch, which I really wasn't expecting! Working with horses can be challenging, especially when you're asking them to stand still, despite the evil horse flies trying to bite them! Lilly was an angel though, and Jess did such a good job of looking serene and beautiful, despite also being nibbled by horse flies herself.
Ione out did herself with hair and make up; something I always think she can't possibly keep doing! I mean, with every shoot we do, I come away more and more excited. Jess has more hair than anyone I've ever seen in my life, so creating this hairstyle was a fairly lengthy process, but one that was totally worth it. Sometimes, it's the hairstyles that look the simplest which actually take the longest!
These photos are my "little girl dream come true," so I know that they'll share a place in my heart for a long time. They might not be the most original images I've taken, or what will appeal to everyone, but they're incredibly special to me, and that means more than anything.
Thank you so much to Jess for modelling, to Ione for her incredible skills, to Lilly for being so patient and looking so beautiful, and to Kwintus for being my inspiration, always :)
